Meet the Coaches

The Clydesdale Colts Cycling Club currently has three coaches (see below) who have been trained by British and Scottish Cycling. All of them volunteer their time, skills and knowledge on a regular basis. There are also volunteers (club members, Committee members and parents) at coaching sessions and in the background assisting with Club organisation and administration.

We are pleased to say that four other parents have applied for the Scottish Cycling Coaching Course at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow in January 2013 (and another is about to apply). This is fantastic news, and is exactly what the Club needs to develop this great Club of ours further.

We welcome any other parents who would also like to get involved as a coach.

Clydesdale Colts’ coaches and helpers have 1st Aid Certificates and are PVG (Disclosure) checked by British Cycling. This is a legal requirement for all British Cycling coaches, officials and volunteers.

Qualified Level 2 Coach - Les McKenzie:
Les joined the Royal Albert Cycling Club in 2009. He did a fair bit of cycling as a teenager; nothing serious as his main sport was boxing.  He was an amateur boxer for 4 years, and he also did a lot of running and completed the first two Glasgow marathons, for example. He joined the armed forces at age 21 in which he completed 6 years’ service. He still takes part in various half marathons. Les has been actively involved with youths and he is also a boxing coach with the Viewpark Boxing Cub, Uddingston. He joined the Royal Albert Cycling Club as all the running has taken its toll on his knees (and he now needs a seat!). He has recently volunteered his services as an enthusiastic and dedicated coach to the Clydesdale Colts and became a Qualified Level 2 coach in 2012.

Trainee Level 2 Coach - Alan Kain:
Since qualifying as a designer over 20 years ago, Alan has run a successful sawmilling and furniture making business. Alan’s extensive knowledge of the woodland environment, presented him with an opportunity to lead and facilitate environmental art workshops and Forest School programmes working in the main with children and vulnerable groups. Alan has always been actively involved in sport; as a successful young athlete and footballer. He has been a keen cyclist since his early teens, resurrecting his interest several years ago and recently became Chairman of the Royal Albert Cycling Club. Alan thoroughly enjoys coaching the Colts and looks forward to seeing the youngsters and the club grow.Alan is a qualified swimming teacher and coaches master swimmers, he is also currently undergoing training to be a cycle pilot for Visibility Scotland.

Trainee Level 2 Coach - Celia Tennant:
Celia graduated with a First in Micro Biology from Glasgow University and subsequently spent 20 years in the Pharmaceutical Industry with the global blue chip organisation Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. She led people and projects in Sales, Marketing and Medical functions at a UK level. In 2008 Celia moved on to help set up Inspiring Scotland; a venture philanthropy organisation which uses money and skills to improve the lives of Scotland’s most vulnerable people. Celia has many sporting interests; starting off in equestrianism and then developing interests in more athletic pursuits; principally multisport and endurance events and has represented Scotland in the past in triathlon, tetrathlon and endurance running. A serious hip injury has curtailed Celia’s competitive efforts, however she has since used her spare time to get more involved in voluntary activity, including coaching the Clydesdale Colts.
